Inaugurated in 2009 with an architectural project by Arquitetos Associados, the space was initially thought to receive the work The Murder of Crows (2008), by Janet Cardiff and Georges Bures Miller, one of the biggest sound installations ever made by the duo. Such initial purpose gave the building its first name, Galpão Cardiff & Miller. Due to its constructive features – the fact of being a major exhibition block, almost devoid of dividers inside – is now called Galeria Galpão and shelters from large-scale installations to smaller works for short- or medium-term exhibitions.
