Escultura para todos os materiais não transparentes (1985) unfolds itself in a namesake series consisting of parts of incomplete spheres of different sizes and materials. Incomplete, this solid shape usually considered of perfect shape, calls attention to the voids between its parts, as well as to the relationship between natural light and the materials used in the making of it.
With this title, literally a ‘sculpture for all non-transparent materials,’ Waltercio Caldas is ironic towards his own practice, once transparency is a recurring feature of his works. In this case, we observe exactly the opposite, when the dim nature of the material – marble for this piece, but also wood, granite, or bronze in others – becomes precisely the point of departure for the sculpture.
